The working document on the right to know was presented today in a press conference at the office of the Siracusa Institute with President Prof. Em. Cherif Bassiouni, Secretary General Ezechia Paolo Reale Esq., Matteo Angioli, Secretary General of the GCRL, and Laura Harth, member of the Scientific Council of the GCRL.
During his speech, Cherif Bassiouni said: “The recognition of the right to know is an important step forward, it is the establishment of a principle. It will be a long campaign because every step will meet the hostility of the states. The states see realpolitik in terms of what I know I can disclose and what I don’t want to disclose. It is too difficult to impose disclosure on a state, because there is no political counterpart that can encourage, let alone motivate or force, the state to move in this direction. But there is have no choice; we cannot remain indifferent. It’s enough to remember what happened in 1939, when we were indifferent: a Holocaust of 6 million Jews and 20 million Slavs, largely due to indifference. Just look at the war in Syria, with almost 500,000 people killed, and world public opinion does not react, does not ask whether there is criminal responsibility on the part of both the Russians and the Iranians, who are primarily responsible along with the Assad regime.”
