21st of May is the Day of Political Prisoners in Belarus. The scale of repression is dramatic. Each figure reflects a broken life of the imprisoned and their loved ones. According to the human rights group Viasna, since 2020 in Belarus:
more than 7.000 people have faced politically motivated criminal prosecution;
3.940 people have been recognised as political prisoners;
8 political prisoners have died behind bars;
8 political prisoners are held incommunicado.
Tens of thousands of Belarusians have been forced to flee the country due to repression. On Prisoners Day Belarus we honour those who were punished for believing in freedom, dignity, and justice.
