During a press conference held today in the Nassiriya Hall of the Italian Senate—organized on the initiative of Senator Giulio Terzi in collaboration with the Global Committee for the Rule of Law “Marco Pannella,” Hands Off Cain, and the Italian Federation for Human Rights, and entitled “Support for the Democratic Forces in Iran”—Senator Giulio Terzi stated:
“For more than ten days, the Iranian people have been taking to the streets across the country in protest. Inflation has risen above 42 percent, Tehran’s Grand Bazaar has shut down, and demonstrations have spread throughout the capital and to more than 130 cities nationwide. History will determine whether the time for freedom in Iran has finally come.
The situation is dramatic, and the regime is responding with an extremely violent crackdown. To date, more than 1,200 people have been arrested, over thirty protesters have been killed, and countless arbitrary abductions have been reported. Schools and universities have been closed.
President Trump declared—shortly after the American intervention in Venezuela—that the United States would take action if Tehran were to shoot and kill peaceful protesters. Many observers point to longstanding connections between the Iranian regime’s activities and Venezuela, dating back to Hezbollah’s decades-long presence in the Latin American country.
This nationwide popular uprising rests on solid foundations. It is not solely about the unbearable economic hardship that the Iranian people are once again being forced to endure; above all, it is about freedom and dignity.
At this critical juncture, it is essential to express our deepest solidarity with all Iranians who look to the West for a firm and united response. Today, the Iranian people are fighting for their rights, their dignity, and their freedom.
The roadmap for a democratic transition outlined in the Ten-Point Plan for the Future of Iran by the National Council of Resistance of Iran, led by Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, represents a credible path toward a truly democratic alternative to the current regime.”
